How To Keep Your Oysters Fresh In A Cooler

Oysters On Ice

Oysters are the perfect addition to your moveable feast. Whether you want to eat them dockside during a day on the bay, or fireside on your next camping trip, it’s easy to store oysters in a cooler for your next trip.

Step one, make sure that your cooler has drain holes and won’t let in outside heat or liquid. You can start by adding some burlap to the bottom of your cooler to absorb excess melt, but it’s not necessary. Next, add a layer of ice to the bottom of your cooler, roughly 2-3” depending on how many oysters. After that, add the oysters trying to spread them as flatly as possible. Crack the drain holes on your cooler open and you’re good to go.

There are a few golden rules to storing oysters in any conditions and they apply here as well.

  1. Oysters will die if submerged in freshwater. If stored in a cooler, make sure the ice melt has a way to run off. 
  2. Keep oysters between 34-45 degrees.
  3. Keep your cooler as shaded as possible.
  4. Discard any oysters than are open or have cracked shells.
