Our Savory & Stewpendous Recipe for Oyster Stew

Oyster stew is a hearty, delicious and easy meal perfect for dreary winter days. Like fried chicken and BBQ, oyster stew recipes vary greatly by region. It’s also a traditional dish for Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving dating back to the 19th century. When early settlers arrived, they were greeted by an exploding oyster population. They were so ubiquitous in fact, that 700 million oysters were harvested in 1880 alone. As they became more familiar with the delicious bivalve, more and more recipes were developed, and oyster stew was born.

Check out our recipe below and tag on Instagram us if you try it at home!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup minced celery
  • 3 TBSP minced shallots
  • 1 qt. half & half
  • 1 jar Wandering Waders Jarred Oysters
  • Salt & pepper
  • Cayenne pepper

Steps:

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Add celery and shallots.
  2. Cook until tender. Add to a pot if not using a Dutch oven.
  3. Add half & half.
  4. Stir continuously until boiling.
  5. Add Wandering Waders Jarred Oysters (undrained).
  6. Add in seasonings to taste.
  7. Cook until oysters curl and serve.

Serve your oyster stew up topped with oyster crackers, toasted bread, a little cheddar or your favorite hot sauce. This easy to make recipe is perfect for a quick lunch or a hearty dinner. Bon Appetit!
