Whether you’re ordering oysters to enjoy at home or for an event you’re hosting, making sure you’re caring for them properly will help keep them fresh and delicious. How you store and care for your White Stone oysters will depend on what you order.
Shucked Oyster Care
Shucked oysters like Wandering Waders Jarred Oysters require no more effort to store than regular oysters. Currently, we offer the jarred oysters in quart-sized jars, and they should be stored in the refrigerator upon arrival. On average, Wandering Waders Jarred Oysters will last about 2 weeks when properly refrigerated and unopened. Once opened, they’re good for about a week. The easiest way to tell if they’re still fresh is to give them a smell, just like milk.
For many people, the 55 shucked oysters that come in a quart of Wandering Waders Jarred Oysters can be a lot to eat in one sitting. Luckily, you can also freeze our jarred oysters. To do this, place the oysters you want to freeze in a Ziploc or vacuum seal bag in a flat layer with just a small splash of water. Seal the bag and lay them flat in your freezer.
When you’re ready to eat them, defrost them in the sink in cool water until room temperature. We recommend consuming them within 48 hours.
Whole Oyster Care
Storing White Stone Oysters after ordering is super easy. If it’s consistently 40 degrees or colder in your area, you can store the oysters in an outdoor cooler (not the shipping cooler) to save space. If not, the oysters should be stored in the refrigerator.
Pull the oysters out of their shipping containers and give them a very light rinse with cold water in the sink. Once done, lay them out on a baking sheet with a towel underneath if possible. Then place in the fridge.
Avoid storing the oysters in a big pile and do not allow them to sit in freshwater. Both of these things will kill a live oyster. Before eating, discard any oysters whose shells have opened.
Live oysters can last 5 or more days if properly stored in a refrigerator, sometimes even longer. Our oysters are shipped as fresh as possible to ensure that you’re getting the best product and to ensure their longevity in storage.
