Spooky Shells- How to Make Oyster Shell Ghosts

Spooky Shells

It’s no coincidence that spooky season and the start of prime oyster season both fall in October. The next time you order White Stone oysters, consider saving your shells and trying this crafty project with your family.

You’ll need:

  • White Stone Oyster shells
  • White acrylic craft paint
  • Black acrylic craft paint or black permanent marker
  • Finishing line or twine
  • Scissors
  • Newspaper
  • Drill
  • Clear acrylic sealing spray (gloss)

The first step for this project is to enjoy delicious White Stone Oysters. After you’ve eaten them, boil the shells for about 15 minutes, and clean them off with a little bit of soap and water. Once they’re cleaned, find a dry, sunny spot outside and let the oyster shells sit for a week or more. You should have dry, white, clean shells.

Drill a small hole towards the small end of the shell. After you’re done painting, you can run pieces of finishing line or twine through the holes to hang the shells.

Next, coat the dried shells in white acrylic craft paint. Two moderate coats should work. Let each coat dry for about 30 minutes.

After they’ve dried, use black acrylic craft paint or permanent markers to draw on your ghost’s faces. Get creative! Is your ghost happy, sad, scary or friendly? Tag us on Instagram with your ghostly creations.

Once you’ve painted your faces and allowed time to dry, place the shells on a piece of newspaper or cardboard and give them a good coating with an acrylic clear coat in a gloss finish.

Just like that, you’ll have a whole family of spooky ghosts to hang around your house. These weatherproof little decorations are perfect for outdoor bushings, your mantle or strung together.
